We will tell you why the Grappler model is so popular. For starters, it combines the best of both worlds, between its  mud tires and its off-road tires.

Now, the Ridge Grappler itself is actually built on an all-terrain platform, whereas you have other ultra or hybrid tires, it is built on the mud tire platform, so the 285/70R17 Nitto Ridge Grappler is kind of giving you the best of both worlds between that mud and the all-terrain.

You could get good on road performance, they’re not too loud. But then if you want to take this thing off road on the weekends, you can definitely do that.

Because it’s a harder compound and they’re not these massive lugs, you have a pretty smooth, pretty stable on road experience with the tires.

But there’s still a large enough that if you take them off road in any kind of low traction environment, they still do just fine because there’s plenty of separation there.

No complaints with them. Good in the dry, good in the wet and actually pretty decent in the snow, too, because it’s again just the hybrid tire that’s good for a little bit of everything.

Another added bonus of these tires is that they’re actually manufactured right here in the United States and actually you could get a chance to tour the factory in white Georgia. So, it’s one of those tires that it’s American made.

2.- Toyota Tacoma with 285/70R17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W

285/70R17 Toyota Tacoma with Falken Wildpeak AT3W

TIRE: FALKEN WILDPEAK A/T3W
PRICE: $282 - $312 Per Tire
SIZE: 285/70R17
MAX. SPEED: 112 mph
MAX. LOAD: 3,195 lbs
MAX. INFLATION PRESSURE 80 psi
TIRE WEIGHT 58 lbs
WARRANTY: 55,000 Miles

First of all, you may notice in this model that the 285/70R17Falken Wildpeak A/T3W have this sort of angled side biter that looks somewhat like a saw blade.

It’s sort of directional how it’s angled up, but you do have that a little bit of extra traction there with those side biters.

They do have those cooling fins along this inner bead of the tire there, which always makes people kind of question why are they there?

If you are running low air pressure, for example, then Falken put these on there to help dissipate the heat, but you don’t see that on any other tire out there.

The other thing is that those shoulder blocks are designed a little bit different. They still have the larger shoulder blocks on the outer edge of the tire and then the scattered or staggered inner tread blocks along the center of the tire to help cut down on that road noise.

3.- Toyota Tacoma with 285/70R17 Yokohama Geolandar X-AT

285/70R17 Toyota Tacoma with Yokohama Geolandar X-AT

TIRE: YOKOHAMA GEOLANDAR X-AT
SIZE: 285/70R17 118Q
PRICE: $295 - $326 Per Tire
MAX. SPEED: 99 mph
MAX. LOAD: 2,910 lbs
MAX. INFLATION PRESSURE: 80 psi
TIRE WEIGHT: 61 lbs
WARRANTY: 45,000 Miles

This 285/70R17 Yokohama Geolandar X-AT is intended to bridge the gap between the mud terrain industry and the all-terrain,  go-anywhere, do-anything market. In essence, it selects up the best features from both types of tires and blends them.

Instead of the typical two ply sidewalls found on all-terrain tires, this one has three.

The air within and the air outside are separated by three layers of material, which should make the tire stronger and more puncture-resistant but will also lessen comfort to some extent because it reduces sidewall flex.

With blocks that are positioned more closely in the centre and more widely apart on the shoulders, the tread pattern draws inspiration from both the AT and MT aspects of its personality.

The lack of somewhat wider shoulder spacing actually shocked me because it would have given the tires a more aggressive tread pattern and improved off-road performance, akin to certain other cross-over tyres on the market.

The center blocks have a combination layout that enables them to simultaneously offer a lot of tread on the road and a lot of angles while you’re on the ground to help you dig in.

4.- Toyota 4Runner with 285/70R17 Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac

285/70R17 Toyota 4Runner with Goodyear Wrangler

TIRE: GOODYEAR WRANGLER DURATRACSIZE: 265/70R17
PRICE: $273 - $301 Per Tire
MAX. SPEED: 99 mph
MAX. LOAD: 3,195 lbs
MAX. INFLATION PRESSURE: 80 psi
TIRE WEIGHT: 51 lbs
WARRANTY: None

The 285/65r18 Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac are used in work trucks, and plow trucks are especially popular in the former. Everybody wears these things because they are quite impressive both off-road and on-road.

You can see they have those big chunky blocks of the tread on the side and then in the middle, it’s a little closer and it’s a smaller block of the tread.

But there is still a lot of space there for the evacuation of not only water, but also gravel, mud rocks, etc. And by having them closer together in the center, you get a little more mileage out of these.

So, depending on the sizes, they have a fifty-thousand-mile warranty. So that’s something you’ll want to investigate.

When it comes to driving in the snow, we can tell you first hand that these things are pretty impressive, just in the tread pattern alone, you will see that there are a ton of zigzag snipers.

And basically, what it does is it collects snow and locks it in those little sections so you don’t turn it into a stain, but you get better acceleration and better braking by having all this extra writing there.

So, if you are looking for a tire with an off-road appearance and good performance both on the road and in difficult terrain such as snow, we recommend the Wrangler Duratrac.

5.- Toyota 4Runner with 285/70R17 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2

The 285/70R17 BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tire has legendary reputation in the off-road community. BFG practically invented the first radial off-road or all-terrain tire over 40 years ago.

The KO2 is the next generation or brother of the original KO tire, which alone, was a rock star in the category.

So to make this tire tougher overall, BFG just basically fortified some of the big weak spots, more specifically the sidewalls and shoulder area, which is where over 80% all terrains tire failures occur.

To do so, they beefed up that shoulder area using that is called their CoreGuard technology, making this tire 15% to 20% stronger than the original KO tire, helping to prevent punctures and thinks like that.

In the BF Goodrich KO2 terrain they are always some kind of expected noise when dealing with a tire aggressive tread design like this, however most customer experienced say that these tires are very quiet while on the road.

A last important detail is that the KO2 is three peak snowflakes rated, meaning that this have met stringent requirements set forth by the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association and the Rubber Association of Canada to identify passenger and light truck tires that provide a higher level of snow traction and meets required performance criteria to be considered a severe snow rated tire, so that way, you can feel confident in the snow or on the ice.

The aggressive and wide tread pattern of the 285/70R17  Open Country AT III provides excellent traction in wet conditions and provides excellent water drainage channels.

The contact patch’s phased computer designed design of blocks and grooves ensures a long-lasting and quiet ride. Each groove is extremely deep, with stone ejecting blocks that have tapering edges.

This allows the tire to maintain exceptional traction throughout each revolution while also reducing the risk of premature tread loss.

The tread pattern is linked together by tie bars in between the tread blocks for added stability and even longer predicted endurance. Interspersed throughout are zig zag sipes that provide additional biting edges for optimum handling in all weather.
