Top #4 Winter Tires: General Altimax Arctic 12 – 205/55r16

Top #4 Winter Tires: General Altimax Arctic 12 – best 205/55r16

General Tire’s winter tire technology has been refined through decades of research and development. The 205/55r16 Altimax Arctic 12 incorporates the company’s most advanced innovations to provide superior snow and ice grip.

The foundation of its enhanced wintertime grip is a revised and revolutionary winter tread compound, which is the chemistry of the tire’s outermost tread layer. The General Altimax Arctic 12’s tread remains soft and malleable on the road surface even in sub-freezing temperatures.

If you’ve ever felt like your car was “skating” over icy roads, it’s because your tires have effectively frozen and are no longer reacting with the road surface. Their tread compound/chemistry isn’t optimized or suited for temps below freezing.

In bad weather, angled tread blocks and a slew of winter sipes provide plenty of “bite,” while also decreasing tread wiggle and block deformation.

The Altimax Arctic 12’s tread is designed to contribute traction in almost every way. Snow Traction Ridges work to establish grip in snow or slush situations even deep in the tire grooves.

Yokohama has released the 205/55r16 Yokohama Avan Fleva Y701, a premium summer tire designed for drivers of sports cars, compact vehicles, CUVs, and limousines, with the goal of improving road safety and comfort.

The tire has a lot to live up to after the success of its predecessors, such as the Advan Sport V105, Advan Neova AD08R, and Advan dB. It functions admirably in dry, damp, and warm circumstances, but it is not ideal for use in the cold.

It’s made using Yokohama’s unique Nano-blend compound technology, which combines silica with fuel-efficient, wear-resistant polymers to provide grip in both dry and wet situations. This combination is also responsible for the tire’s remarkable and efficient long-term performance.

The contrasting pitch of the tread pattern allows drivers to comfortably drive at high speeds and is also responsible for the tire’s noise reduction characteristics. To top it off, the Yokohama Advan Fleva V701’s firm shoulders and center rib keep the car grounded with improved grip and stability at high speeds.

Furthermore, the central rib’s drop point groove design quickly evacuates all accumulated water. This helps to prevent hydroplaning and, as a result, reduces braking distances on wet roads.

The Yokohama Advan Fleva V701’s external design allows it to properly transfer pressure throughout the contact patch, resulting in efficient gripping, breaking, and handling of the vehicle.

Top #4 Summer Tires: Continental ExtremeContact Sport – 205/55r16

Top #4 Summer Tires: Continental ExtremeContact Sport –best 205/55r16

Continental’s unique +Silane technology is combined with a superior summer tread compound and a 5 or 6-rib asymmetric tread pattern for improved grip and handling on both dry and wet road surfaces.

Larger outside tread blocks and a continuous center rib, along with Continental’s proprietary SportPlus Technology, give this tire a faster steering response and feel while still providing the cornering grip and stability you’d expect from a UHP summer tire. In this regard, it ranks among the best tires in its class.

Increased grip on wet pavement is provided by the use of the +Silane compound and an improved footprint with broad circumferential grooves. The grooves make you feel more confident behind the wheel by limiting the likelihood of hydroplaning at higher speeds. On wet roads, we believe the 205/55r16 Continental ExtremeContact Sport is the company’s best tire to date.

Top #5 Summer Tires: Hankook Ventus R-S4 – 205/55r16

Top #5 Summer Tires: Hankook Ventus R-S4 – best 205/55r16

Hankook’s Extreme Performance Summer tire, the 205/55r16 Hankook Ventus R-S4 (Z232), is designed for drivers of sports cars, sports coupes, and performance sedans who want near-motorsports levels of grip for track events, autocross, and drifting on a tire that can be driven on the street.

The Ventus R-S4 is not designed to be maintained, stored, or driven in near-freezing or below-freezing conditions, through snow, or on ice, like all summer tires.

The Ventus R-S4 is made from a revolutionary high-grip carbon black and silica compound that has been molded into a low-void, directed design. The broad, continuous center rib maintains constant contact with the road for a firm on-center feel and quick steering reaction.

Massive outboard shoulder blocks provide the lateral grip required for high-g cornering in motorsports and performance driving, while chamfered block edges increase contact with the pavement under load. The inclusion of highly dispersible silica has helped with wet traction.

The silica is better bonded inside the compound matrix thanks to a functionalized polymer, and the two major circumferential grooves allow water to pass through the contact patch for greater hydroplaning resistance. Heavy rain and standing water can still make longitudinal and lateral hydroplaning resistance difficult, so drivers should be cautious and drive slowly in these situations.

The Ventus R-S4’s performance begins on the inside. Sidewall flex is reduced by using a high-modulus bead filler and sidewall reinforcing material, resulting in a faster handling response. The tread is supported by two large steel belts that sit beneath a two-ply casing.

An additional reinforcement in the shoulder helps endure the punishment of performance driving, especially in high-camber circumstances, and a two-layer (single layer in some sizes) jointless nylon cover is designed to maximize handling and stable the tread for extended life.
